And He took the children... Mark 10:16
At Sekolah Pelita Harapan, the Junior School is very concerned with the well-being of each and every child. Since expatriate teachers and national teachers work alongside each other in the same class supporting units of inquiry and other subject areas, the additional help is beneficial to the full range of students. The classroom teachers are the main pastoral caregivers for most of the students. When needed there are counseling and learning support teams that can become involved.
LST will provide assistance to the classroom teacher for students needing more individualized help. LST is also a resource for parents and often participates in parent meetings. LST also has contacts with the greater Jakarta community for testing students. A referral procedure is applied if teachers or parents consider more support is needed for a student. This referral will be discussed by Principal/Head of School and the Learning Support Team in order to consider the next steps to be taken.
Sylvia Cecilia
Hi! My name is Kezia Sylvia. I've been serving Him at SPH as Learning Support Teacher since June 2009 and feel so blessed to be part of the school here. I graduated from University of Indonesia majoring in Psychology and in 2001 took my master's degree in Church Ministry.
While studying Psychology, God had put a seed in my heart to serve Him. As a matter of fact in 1988 during my "Kuliah Kerja Nyata" in Kepulauan Seribu, while teaching children of the island, I made a promise to Him that one day I will dedicate my life for children- A promise that was soon forgotten by me (but not by Him!). So God repeated His calling for me several times and finally in 1998 God opened the doors of opportunity to serve Him in several ways, especially in Counseling and Teaching, as Lecturer in Seminaries teaching Psychology and Inner Healing, as a Trainer/Speaker in a Christian organization teaching Character Building as well as Child Psychology and a Teacher in a school using the School of Tomorrow Curriculum. By God's grace, He gives me opportunity to "go deeper" into Special Needs as I will be taking Special Needs courses in the near future in order for me to provide better support for my students here in SPH.
Coming from a broken-home and having converted when I was a teenager, I realize that being a Learning Support Teacher/Counselor is a very good opportunity to bring children to know and accept Jesus at early age. In His hands, I believe we can be a potential agent-of-change in children's lives. My dream is to be a part of change in this beloved nation and to build good leaders with Godly characters... and through education, by God's grace; I believe SPH can change this nation!
Hondho W.Setyaningsih
I started serving SPH in 2002 teaching first graders for 2 years, but then God gave me a lot of opportunities to experience and learn from different grades. And so, I used to help in pull out sessions in ESL before moving to Kindergarten in 2004. Since that time, Kindergarten has been in my heart. However, God gave me another great opportunity to learn when He sent and led me to lecture at the Teachers College UPH in 2007 - 2009, teaching subjects such as Pedagogy, Theories of Learning, Psycho Education and Teaching Children With Diverse Abilities. Then in 2009 I went back to teach Kindergarten in SPH for 2 years. This academic year 2011 - 2012, again, God has been giving me a great opportunity to learn and serve Him in the Learning Support, and I thank Him for this.
I believe that God works through education and I want to equip myself so that I can give Him my best in my teaching. I graduated in 1995 from the English Department of Satya Wacana Christian University, majoring in teaching English. Then in 2004 God gave me a great opportunity to join Tabor College to learn more about Him through Christian Education. Again, in 2008 I joined UPH Graduate School to learn further about teaching. God has been so faithful in holding my hand through the journey of learning Him through education.
So, I am here to serve Him ...
Stephanie Sinaga
My name is Stephanie Sinaga, a new addition to learning support team this year. I grew up in Medan, the most high-spirited city in Indonesia. I was born as the eldest and I have three younger brothers. In primary school, I was diagnosed with ADHD. So, I have my own experience of being the "special student" in the classroom (and my teachers were not as nice as SPH's back then).
I studied Psychology in Universitas Padjadjaran Bandung and graduated in 2008. Then, God called me to be a teacher and then I continued my education in UPH Teachers College majoring in Primary Education. Teaching has always been my passion and sharing the gospel to children. I am blessed with an opportunity to serve God as a teacher in SPH.
